# The Deeper Akan Meaning of Sankofa
|

|
||
## Cosmology • Spirituality • Time • Identity • Memory • Power
|
||
|
||
Sankofa is not a simple "go back and get it."
|
||
|
||
It is an entire **Akan worldview**, containing multiple layers of meaning and significance.
|
||
|
||

## 1. Sankofa and Akan Cosmology
|
||
|
||
In Akan cosmology, the universe is:
|
||
|
||
* **circular**, not linear
|
||
* **interconnected**, not hierarchical
|
||
* **ancestrally governed**, not isolated
|
||
* based on **balance and return cycles**
|
||
|
||
Sankofa represents:
|
||
|
||
### **The return to origin to complete the cycle.**

It echoes the Akan belief that life, identity, and destiny (nkrabea) must be aligned with:

* **source (kra)** – the soul's divine spark

|

|
||
|

Without returning to origin, the cycle is incomplete.

Western time is linear.

Akan time is **recursive** — events are patterns that return.
